We probably never should have gone to Iraq or Afghanistan in the first place. But we are the world’s cops and the premier “super power”. And we are a bit overly arrogant about it. And the Bush Administration are war hawks so the defense industry stays active and profitable. So what’s next?
We went to Iraq to prevent their dictator from sending scud missiles to Israel, but the only reason we are still in Iraq is because of their oil reserves. Our oil supplies are dwindling here in the USA and we are not going to drill for new supplies. The environmentalists and conservationists will see to that, at least not until people can’t drive their cars and threaten a revolution.
We get very little oil from Iraq today, but our government knows it’s there and we should have some level of control of the Iraqi oil distribution in the future. They will “owe us” for all of the billions in aide we have been sending.
Afghanistan is a totally different story. The only reason we are there is because it was the base of operation for Al-Qaeda. We threw the Taliban out of power as a sideline, but the current government is so corrupt, one has to wonder which was the lesser of the evils.
Eight years have passed and Al-Qaeda’s leader, Osama bin Laden, is still at large. So much for our military intelligence and super power status. We can’t find one man, who stands taller than most in the country, and kill him for the several attacks he orchestrated against us… the infidels.
I guess I’m at the point where I wonder if we shouldn’t just bomb the shit out of the countries. The people live in third world poverty and practically stone age conditions… who cares if we blow a few million off the map. Many of them might appreciate the chance to meet their Allah.
Well, that’s not going to happen. We will stay in Iraq and Afghanistan for a long time, and we will increase our troop levels. But I have to believe there is another reason. I do not believe we will turn Iraq and Afghanistan into efficient democracies. It could be centuries before their version of Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock and George Washington lead the people into personal freedom.
We now have a significant threat from Iran. The extremist Islamic leaders have been building a uranium enrichment plant for some time. They claim that it is for nuclear power purposes, yet they have tremendous oil reserves. They also have recently been testing long range missiles. They want a nuclear bomb and a means to deliver it to Israel. It’s that simple.
Iran is bordered by Iraq on their west, Afghanistan & Pakistan on their east and the Indian Ocean on their south. We have troops, military equipment and the Navy in all these areas. Don’t expect the US to reduce our troops in the area until the Iranian threat is eliminated. Unfortunately, I do not believe President Obama has the white house advisers to get the job done, nor the balls to stand-up to Iran.
Obama is more interested in putting our country deep into debt so the Democrats can pass a health bill. They have been trying for over five decades and it is their number one priority. And they are willing to sacrifice their lead in the Senate and House to get it passed now. Once it is passed, it will be almost impossible to retract it… much like Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, welfare and food stamps.
